Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Belmont Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Belmont is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety, and welfare of our clients, employees, contractors, visitors, and the wider public. This policy sets out the principles and responsibilities that guide our approach to safe working practices across all of our gardening and landscaping activities.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent accidents, injuries, work-related ill health, and damage to property or the environment. We aim to achieve this by planning work carefully, using suitable and well-maintained equipment, and ensuring that everyone involved understands their responsibilities. We seek continuous improvement in our health and safety performance and review this policy regularly.
Legal Responsibilities and Compliance
Gardeners Belmont complies with all applicable health and safety legislation relevant to gardening, landscaping, and grounds maintenance operations. We will keep up to date with changes in legal requirements and recognised industry best practice and will adjust our procedures and guidance to reflect these developments where appropriate.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Belmont is responsible for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes allocating appropriate resources to health and safety, setting clear standards, and monitoring performance. Managers will ensure risk assessments are carried out, safe systems of work are in place, and that staff and contractors receive suitable information, instruction, and training.
Management will lead by example, demonstrating safe behaviour, enforcing safe working procedures, and taking prompt action when unsafe practices or conditions are identified. Any incident, near miss, or concern related to health and safety will be investigated so that any necessary corrective actions can be taken.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Belmont has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Team members must cooperate fully with all health and safety arrangements, follow instructions and training provided, and use equipment and protective gear correctly.
Employees must report hazards, defects, incidents, and near misses to their supervisor so that risks can be managed effectively. Staff should not interfere with or misuse anything that has been provided for their health, safety, or welfare.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work, Gardeners Belmont will assess the risks associated with gardening and maintenance tasks, including but not limited to use of powered machinery, hand tools, ladders, chemicals, and work near public areas. Risk assessments will identify control measures designed to eliminate or reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work will be developed for regular activities such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, waste handling, and the use of garden machinery. These procedures will consider access and egress, ground conditions, weather, noise, vibration, manual handling, and interaction with clients, the public, and other contractors.
Use of Equipment and Machinery
All tools, machinery, and equipment used by Gardeners Belmont will be suitable for the task, properly maintained, and inspected regularly. Only trained and authorised personnel will operate powered equipment, such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, shredders, and other mechanical tools.
Safety guards, cut-off switches, and other protective devices must never be removed or bypassed. Faulty equipment will be taken out of service immediately and not used until it has been repaired or replaced.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, Gardeners Belmont will provide appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection, and weather-appropriate workwear.
Employees are required to wear the protective equipment provided when instructed, to look after it with reasonable care, and to report any damage or loss so that it can be repaired or replaced promptly.
Chemical and Hazardous Substances Safety
When using fertilisers, pesticides, weed killers, or other substances that may present a hazard, Gardeners Belmont will follow product safety data sheets and relevant guidance. Substances will be stored, transported, and used safely, and only by individuals who have been trained and are competent.
Exposure to chemicals will be controlled by selecting appropriate products, using correct application methods, and employing suitable protective measures to safeguard employees, clients, pets, wildlife, and the environment.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, digging, and repetitive movements. Gardeners Belmont will seek to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries by planning work to reduce unnecessary manual handling, using mechanical aids where practical, and providing training in correct lifting techniques and safe working postures.
Employees are encouraged to take sensible breaks, vary tasks where possible, and report any signs of discomfort or strain so that work practices can be reviewed.
Public, Client, and Property Protection
Gardeners Belmont recognises its responsibility to protect clients, visitors, neighbours, passers-by, and their property during gardening operations. Work areas will be organised to minimise risks from machinery, flying debris, tools, and vehicles. Barriers, signage, or temporary exclusions will be used where necessary to keep others at a safe distance.
We will take appropriate measures to prevent damage to buildings, surfaces, fences, garden features, and utilities such as cables and pipes. Any accidental damage or incident affecting the public will be reported and addressed promptly and professionally.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Gardeners Belmont will provide suitable and proportionate health and safety training for employees and, where applicable, contractors. This includes induction training, task-specific instructions, and refresher training when roles, equipment, or procedures change.
Supervision will be provided as needed to ensure that less experienced staff and new starters work safely until they are assessed as competent for independent work.
Emergency Preparedness
Appropriate arrangements will be in place for dealing with emergencies such as accidents, sudden illness, fire, or environmental incidents. Employees will be informed of emergency procedures, including how to summon assistance and how to respond to incidents on client premises or in public spaces.
First aid provisions will be made available, and incidents will be recorded and reviewed to help prevent recurrence.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Belmont will monitor health and safety performance through site checks, equipment inspections, incident reporting, and consultation with employees. Lessons learned from incidents, near misses, and feedback will be used to enhance our procedures and training.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to ensure it remains suitable and effective for the range of gardening and grounds maintenance services we provide.
Policy Communication and Availability
This policy is communicated to all employees and relevant contractors of Gardeners Belmont. It is also available to clients and interested parties on request, so that our safety commitments and standards are transparent and clearly understood.
